MADURAI TOURISM >> THINGS TO KNOW
Tourist Offices

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) office is near the main bus stand. 180-TB Complex, W. Veli Street: telephone- 734757. It is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 5:30 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to 12:30 pm.

Accomodation

There are several reasonably priced clean places to stay in along Town Hall Road and Dindigul Road. The bigger hotels, and there are some pretty good national chains which have deluxe hotels here, are across the Vaigai River to its northern side.

What to bring
Light cotton clothes and open sandals will stand you in good stead. Its respectful to cover your head when you go into the temples, so carry a scarf or stole.

Dining & Entertainment

Dining can be an ambience rich affair. There are several rooftop restaurants on Town Hall Road and W. Perumal Maithy Road where you can sit back and relish the soft cool breeze and views of the temples as you dip into steaming sambar. All the usual suspects line up on the menus in Madurai: Chinese, ‘Continental’, south Indian and north Indian tandoori.

By way of entertainment, you can choose from English, Hindi and Tamil cinema. Cultural programmes are presented at the Tamil Isai Sangam and Lakshmi Sundaram Hall. The Gandhi Museum Library and District Library offer information on various subjects. There is also an excellent Sound & Light show at the palace, done in English and Tamil.
